Dilly the little dragon woke up with a hiccup. HIC! A tiny puff of fire popped out of Dilly’s nose. Pop!

(Hiccup loudly each time and let your child join in.)

HIC! The toast turned into charcoal. HIC! The curtains went POOF. HIC! The cat’s whiskers curled right up. “Oh dear,” said Dilly. “I must stop these hiccups!”

First Dilly held a big breath. Hold, hold, hold… HIC! Then Dilly tried drinking water upside down. HIC! SPLASH! The water went everywhere, and everyone giggled.

(Sing the HIC-la-la in a silly wobbly voice.)

Then Dilly tried standing on one foot and singing. “HIC-la-la, HIC-la-la!” Dilly wobbled, and wobbled, and sat down with a bump. Plop!

A tiny mouse climbed up onto Dilly’s toe. “Dilly,” said the mouse, “I have an idea. Close your eyes and take three slow, sleepy breaths. Breathe in like you are smelling hot chocolate. Breathe out like you are cooling it down.”

(Take three slow breaths with your child.)

Dilly breathed in, slowly, and out. In… and out… In… and out… The hiccups got smaller. Hic… hic… and then, nothing at all. Just a warm, cosy quiet.

“They’re gone!” whispered Dilly. “Thank you, little mouse.” The mouse smiled and curled up in the warm hollow of Dilly’s tail. One last tiny puff came out of Dilly’s nose, a glowing smoke ring shaped like a star, and it floated up to the ceiling.

(Make soft little snores.)

The curtains were a little black, and the toast was charcoal, but nobody minded. Dilly and the mouse snuggled up together, warm as toast, and fell asleep with soft little snores. Goodnight, Dilly. Goodnight, you.
